DeWalt DC9180 18v Lithium Ion Battery Review

I’ve been using the Dewalt 18v battery for about a year now, and after hundreds of charges later, I think it’s finally a good time to review the product. The Dewalt DC9180 is an 18v lithium-ion battery pack, and according to Dewalt it’s supposed to have a much longer lifespan (2000 vs 800 for NiCd batteries), it’s much remain 100% charged even if you charge it and just leave it there for a long time.

Of course, this all sounds great, but is it all hype or does it live up to what Dewalt claims?

Dewalt 18v Lithium Ion battery, Dewalt 18v battery nano

Features and descripsion:

  • Design and technology: The product is developed based on nano technology and this makes it a durable and efficient device. This is a powerful pack without the issues of memory or self discharge. The battery is compatible with all Dewalt 18v power tools and according to Dewalt it’s supposed to have a much longer lifespan (2000 vs 800 for NiCd batteries), it’s much remain 100% charged even if you charge it and just leave it there for a long time.
  • Weight: The main problem with most battery packs is that they are heavy and people find it very inconvenient to manage them. However, you won’t have that complaint about dewalt 18v battery pack because the company has managed to pack this technical brilliance under 1.5 pounds.
  • Charger: It can also be charged with other Dewalt chargers, The DC9310, DC9320, or DC9319 for instance.
  • Warranty: 3 year warranty, 90 days money back guarantee and 2 year free service warranty.

Pros:
First Impressions: Right off the bat, this Dewalt 18v might knock you off because the shape at the bottom is different than most of the old batteries. I was somewhat used to telling a good battery from a bad one but looking at the shape of base. But in face the Dewalt 18v is a lot lighter than the NiCd battery packs, which is great because my job requires me to move the battery pack around.
Super Compatibility: The Dewalt 18v battery fits fine in most old tools although it has a small cosmetic difference. So far all old tools can work with this battery pack, no complains about that. Dewalt has also made this battery compatible with close to all their 18v tools, which is absolutely great.
Increased Power: Prior to using the Dewalt 18v battery, I’ve been using the newer XRP tools and they’re clearly designed for a lithium-ion battery pack. This is one of the greatest things about switching to a lithium-ion battery pack, my tools deliver MUCH more power and it’s just a greater experience operating the tools that I use in my everyday work. Making the plunge was definitely worth it, as this has made my work significantly easier.

Double or Triple the Lifespan? A year later my Dewalt 18v battery hasn’t died out yet, that’s not to say that I’m 100% sure that it lasts 2-3 times longer than the NiCd batteries, time will tell. That being said, the battery pack stays charged even if I wait a long time between use, there’s no self discharge unlike my NiCd batteries. Also, it has a much faster speed of recharge which wasn’t mentioned at all, but it’s definitely helpful.

Cons:
The only drawback is the Dewalt battery is Twice the price of a NiCd one but they don’t hold anymore juice than the NiCd batteries. The technology of lithium-ion batteries definitely warrants the price of it, and it’s an unfair to compare the prices of lithium ion batteries to NiCd battery packs.
One thing that you might find inconvenient would be the lack of warning signs about battery running out. In the older batteries you would understand that your battery is about to die because the performance of the tools would also vary accordingly. But this battery pack suddenly dies without any warning which means that either the tool will be running or it won’t be. But this is not a con because it ensures the consistency in performance of your tools. This is also helpful in increasing the life of your battery because you won’t drag it to squeeze out the last drop it has in it.

What Customer Are Saying:
Li power to your tools - much better than NiCd (by Ellembe "Ellembe"):So much more power and stamina than the old NiCd batteries. They fit fine in the old tools but there is a small cosmetic issue as they have a different shape than the old batteries.
Like it (by Alan J):Impressed with the run time as well as the lighter weight as compared to the 18 volt Ni-Cads I am currently using.
Second purchase (by  Jeff "the_chiefgeek"): This battery simply is worth every penny it costs.I could not imagine anything lasting close to how long this battery lasts.

Conclusion:
Well you might raise your eyebrows a bit when you have your first look at the pricing but as you go through the technical specifications and usability of the product, you will understand the investment is totally worth it. This product comes at a reasonable and affordable price and you cannot find a better deal anywhere. The battery pack is definitely worth a shot for your Dewalt 18v tools and you won’t regret your investment.

  1. Is it true that Ryobi, Rigid, Powerstroke and DeWalt are all manufactured in the same factory and that only the guide tabs on the shaft of the battery prevent them from being interchangeable? That would mean that if you shaved off the guide tab, you'd be able to interchange batteries.
