How To Fix A DeWalt 18v Battery

15 rechargeable battery cells in C size are linked in series formation in an 18 volt Dewalt battery. This battery can provide total power of 18 volt by linking all of these battery cells together (15 cells x 1.2V = 18V) in a chain formation The 18V Dewalt battery will die if any one of its 15 rechargeable battery cell dies. You can easily repair the dead C battery cell within the battery pack to restore your 18 volt Dewalt battery.

how to fix a dewalt 18v battery, how to rebuild a dewalt 18v battery

1. While fixing your 18 volt Dewalt battery first of all you will have to open its battery pack with the help of a screw driver. Use a fitly sized Torx screwdriver. If you do not have a Torx set, take away the screws employing a Phillips screwdriver. You should put the screws at a safe place as they are needed while reassembling it. (Note: If you have an old model of Dewalt battery then you will have to use the soldering iron with chisel tip to open its sealed top by cutting it with the tip of soldering iron.)

2. Next, place the battery cells in the same formation as they were placed in your 18 v Dewalt battery case after removing them from the case. Remember the pattern of linking the batteries together as you will have to reassemble them in the same pattern after recharging its cells. You should note the connectivity of positive and negative poles of each battery cell removed from the Dewalt battery to avoid any confusion while reassembling them. This is a very minor yet important point and you should remember it. (you should mark the polarity of the batteries or take a photography of the layout).

3. Preheat the soldering iron to operating temperature, dissolve the solder under the metal so you can take away the cells. Put the tip of the soldering iron onto a metal plate merely over where a cell is connected. Let the warmth transfer through. because the solder melts, take away the soldering iron and quickly use a little combine of long-nose pliers to carefully elevate up the metal plate before the solder sets once more. Repeat the method on all the cells till the metal strips are taken away. Put off the soldering iron. Take away the 15 cells from your battery compartment. (You can see on how to solder the battery here).

4. Now recognize the dead cell from all the 15 cells removed from the battery case with the help of a battery tester. If your battery tester shows the reading of 1.2 V then the concerned cell is ok and if it shows less than 1V then that cell should be considered discharged. You should notice all the problems in the defective cell before recharging it. (If almost the cell of the battery die, I recommend you should replace them by a Rebuild Kit )

5. Now you should desolder the leads of the defective battery cell to delink it from the chain of 15 cells of your 18 v Dewalt battery. You should hold the red alligator clamp of the 15 volt power source on the positive terminal of your battery cell and black alligator on the negative terminal for not more than 3 seconds. You should immediately remove the alligators and check the level of power in that cell again. If your battery tester shows the reading of 1.2 volts then the problem of your battery is fixed but if it still shows lower reading then you should repeat the process till it shows the reading of 1.2 volt.

You should check and fix all of the battery cells in the similar manner before reassembling your 18v Dewalt battery. You should start resoldering all the battery cells in chain formation in the same manner as you have removed them. Finally, place all of these batteries in the case and screw it back properly. You should use duct tape or glue to fix the top of the battery case, if you have cut open it. Place your restore DeWalt 18v battery on charge for 1 hour. Thus you can fix your 18v Dewalt battery easily.
